The worst part about American prisons is that they teach the inmates how to be prisoners- not how to cope and live in real life. Many inmates continually find themselves back in prison, because they don't have the skills to live outside of it. Sure, some prisons have rehabilitation or occupational facilities, but most don't, and the inmates many times don't even need to complete the programs.
It says bad things about our society that people can't escape the spiral of prison, and that we don't do anything to help them. There needs to be better programs for helping people, otherwise society as a whole cannot improve.
The movie we watched in class totally represented that. The roomates of the main guy ended up back in jail less than a few months after they got out. It's an endless spiral and there do need to be better programs out there for stopping it.
ReplyDeleteYeah, it definitely doesn't benefit our country by having all these millions of people in jail, not being a productive part of society. If we taught them how to live and be successful outside of jail, we would have a better country.
ReplyDeleteI agree that jail doesn't teach the inmates how to change and stop crimes, it basically puts criminals in a cell and once their time is served they leave and end up right back in jail. Their needs to be better programs for the inmates to stop more crimes from happening.
ReplyDeleteI think that we should really have more jails like the one we saw in the last part of the movie. I think being able to relate to other prisoners like that is really key to recovery and just becoming a better person.
ReplyDeleteI agree that jail doesn't add anything positive to the people experienceing it. If there would be programs that everyone had to take that showed them how good it is to be a productive member of society then maybe when they'd leave the jail, they could leave a positive mark on the world.
